A German Bill Bryson…
…that’s how readers judged Hermann Plasa’s stories about his bicycle tours across the USA. 2005 he went to America for the first time it was love at first sight. Between March 2007 and November 2010 he cycled through 21 U.S. states, covering approximately 10,500 miles.
After 25 years of cycling across Europe, the German had finally found his cycling paradise far away from home. After two short warm-up trips in 2005 (“Green Mountain Loop in Vermont”) and 2006 (“San Francisco Bay Trail”) he undertook his first Cross-Country-Tour from west to east in 2007, following the “Southern Tier” from San Diego, CA to St. Augustine, FL. Two years later he followed the Mississippi River Trail from the headwaters to the Gulf crossing the USA from north to south.
This book is about his third Cross-Country-Tour from Seattle, WA to Key West, FL. Being a German, more precisely a Bavarian from the town of Munich, Hermann Plasa tells his roadside stories from a refreshing and entertaining German (ah… Bavarian) point of view.
So saddle up in your sofa, hammock or favorite reading chair and accompany the German Bill Bryson across the U.S.
A German Cyclist Goes USA 123 Roadside Stories between Seattle and Key West eBook Hermann Plasa
I enjoyed reading Herman's perspective as a European cycling across America. I'm embarking upon a cross-country cycling tour (US) myself, so I am eager to read about the adventures of those who have gone before me. The book makes good reading(in kindle form) to pass the time on the trainer and treadmill while working on my fitness. Though some of the "adventures" emanating from being self-supported and camping make me glad my sojourn will be supported by a SAG vehicle. Bugs, rain, heat, cold, there's no escape when you are carrying your shelter in panniers. I only took one star off because of what seemed to be (perhaps I am being purely defensive) a supercilious tone the writer adopts when recounting some of the sad and regrettable portions of our US history, particularly pertaining to slavery and Native Americans. I would expect someone of German descent to exhibit more humility in that regard. Overall though a great read, when not regaling us with stories of the road, Herman shares witticisms and insights of historical detail regarding the areas he is passing through. i have recommended this book to my cycling partners.Product details

A German Cyclist Goes USA 123 Roadside Stories between Seattle and Key West eBook Hermann Plasa Reviews
Entertaining journal of a cross country trip . I would have liked to read about what gear he used, how he prepared, and what he would do differently for the next trip.
Easy to read, written as a daily journal of a German bicycling from Vancover to Key West Florida. Good writing style made me feel like I was experiencing the journey too. Good photos add to the enjoyment.
Enjoyed the book.
